A scrap metal baler is a hydraulic press that compacts loose ferrous and non-ferrous scrap into dense, uniform bales. Baling cuts the volume of scrap for storage and transport, makes the yard safer and easier to manage, and produces a regular charge that steel mills and foundries can feed directly. Roter (R.F. Srl) designs and builds three families of heavy-duty scrap metal balers in Ferrara, Italy: the RR5/RR6 balers, the RR715.6 shear baler and the RA Series automatic balers.
Three Decades of Heavy Engineering, One Purpose
Roter was founded in Ferrara in 2014, but its story starts long before that. The company was built on three decades of heavy-engineering experience, and on a question every scrap operator knows well: how do you turn a yard full of bulky, irregular metal into a product that moves efficiently, safely and profitably?
The answer became a range of balers designed around the realities of the scrap yard: irregular loads, abrasive material, long shifts, dust and weather. Every machine is still designed and built 100% in Italy, and every one is backed for its whole working life from the same factory that built it.
The Right Baler for Every Scrap Stream
No two operations process the same material in the same way. The right scrap metal baler depends on what you process, how much of it, and what your buyer expects to receive. The Roter range answers three distinct needs:
| Machine | Built for | Key facts (from the product pages) |
|---|---|---|
| RR5 / RR6 baler | Car dismantlers, demolition sites, scrap yards and steel works baling bulky and mixed scrap | Box length 5 m (RR5) or 6 m (RR6) · 15–20 t/h on end-of-life vehicles, 8–14 t/h on light mixed scrap · no foundation required |
| RR715.6 shear baler | Yards and demolition contractors that need to bale and cut heavy, bulky ferrous scrap | 715-tonne class · four programmes: Dense Bale, Bale for Mills, Shear, Shear with Pre-compression |
| RA Series automatic baler | Industrial and steel plants with continuous scrap flows | Fully automatic baling that fits a structured workflow and removes a manual labour line |

Engineered Where the Force Matters Most
Compression force inside a baler is not constant. It climbs steeply as material is driven towards the discharge door, where the highest loads of the entire cycle occur. Roter’s solution? Not two cylinders, but three, positioned asymmetrically to concentrate force exactly where the material resists most.
The outcome: tighter, more uniform bales, and less strain on any single component and on the structure of the box. Read the engineering behind it.
- Proven hydraulics and power. A Parker PV Plus Series main pump, with a Perkins or CAT diesel engine; the RR5/RR6 is also available with a 75 kW electric motor (90 kW option).
- One operator. Radio remote control and a 7″ or 10″ touch screen let one person load from the crane and run the cycle.
- The bale your buyer wants. Dense Bale and Bale for Mills cycles on every RR Series machine; the RR715.6 adds Shear and Shear with Pre-compression.
From Delivery to First Bale, Without Civil Works
A new baler should start earning quickly, not wait for a building project. The RR5/RR6 needs no foundation in any configuration, so there are no civil works before the first bale. It can be supplied fixed, roll-on/roll-off, semi-mobile, or mounted on a three-axle trailer, with diesel power as standard and electric on request. For operators who move between sites, rent their yard or simply want to start baling sooner, that flexibility changes the project. Why no foundation matters.
A Partnership for the Life of the Machine
For a procurement manager, the purchase price is only the first chapter. What keeps a baler earning, year after year, is the support behind it. Every Roter machine includes:
- Installation and commissioning on site, by the technicians who know the machine
- Operator and maintenance training, so your crew runs it safely from the first shift
- Remote diagnostics, tracing many faults without waiting for a site visit
- On-site technical assistance when a visit is needed
- Guaranteed spare-parts supply from Ferrara
Because design, manufacturing and after-sales all sit in Ferrara, the engineers who answer your call know the machine on your site. Find your nearest contact on the sales network page.
Proven Across Every Sector of Metal Recycling
- Automotive / ELV: baling depolluted car shells, vans and light mixed scrap with the RR5/RR6.
- Industrial & steel plants: automatic baling of continuous scrap flows with the RA Series.
- Industrial demolition: structural steel, plate and rebar with the RR715.6 shear baler.
- Recycling industry: high-volume, mixed scrap streams in recycling yards.
- Special waste management: controlled processing of difficult materials.
Five Questions Before You Choose a Scrap Metal Baler
Before you compare quotes, answer five questions. Together they decide the right configuration far more than any single datasheet figure:
- Material mix: car bodies, light mixed scrap, heavy structural steel, turnings or industrial offcuts?
- Volume: how many tonnes per day, and how variable are the peaks?
- Output format: what bale size and density does your steel mill or buyer accept?
- Power and site: diesel or mains power, fixed or mobile, how much space and what layout?
- Feeding and crew: crane, grapple or conveyor, and how many operators per shift?
Our procurement manager’s buying guide explores each point in depth.

Scrap Metal Baler: Frequently Asked Questions
What does a scrap metal baler do?
A scrap metal baler compresses loose ferrous and non-ferrous scrap into dense, uniform bales. This reduces volume for storage and transport, improves yard safety and produces a regular charge that steel mills and foundries can feed directly.
What is the difference between a baler and a shear baler?
A baler compacts scrap into bales. A shear baler, such as the Roter RR715.6, also has a shear, so it can cut compacted material into pre-sized pieces as well as produce bales. Choose a shear baler when your buyer wants cut scrap or your material is too long or heavy for baling alone.
How many tonnes per hour can a Roter baler process?
The RR5/RR6 baler processes 15–20 tonnes per hour on end-of-life vehicles and 8–14 tonnes per hour on light mixed scrap. Real throughput depends on your material and feeding method, so our engineers confirm it against your scrap before quoting.
Does a Roter scrap baler need a foundation?
No. The RR5/RR6 needs no foundation in any configuration and can be supplied fixed, roll-on/roll-off, semi-mobile or mounted on a three-axle trailer.
Where are Roter balers made?
Roter scrap metal balers and shear balers are designed and built in Ferrara, Italy. Installation, operator training, remote diagnostics, on-site assistance and spare parts are supplied from the same location.
